Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953, during the height of McCarthyism. Amidst an atmosphere of persecution and social hysteria, he produced a dramatic portrayal that revisited what happened during the 17th-century witch hunts in Salem. That highly controversial period in Western history became a ruthless mirror of the darkest and most sinister spectres that at times succeed in overwhelming our very souls.
