A BRECHTIAN APOCRYPHA
The irreverent Natalino Balasso has created this original play—an apocryphal take on Brecht’s Saint Joan of the Stockyards—populating it with some of the most iconic characters from the German playwright’s literary universe (Mauler, Cridle, Slift, the fearsome Graham, and even Puntila and his servant Matti). These figures are placed in grotesquely modern settings, with new words and new contexts, yet still knee-deep in the muck of power and subjugation. Standing against this world of ruthless magnates and abuse is Giovanna Darko, with her social-socialist community. But can an online community truly be a community? Sharing the stage with Balasso are Giovanni Anzaldo, Marta Cortellazzo Wiel, and Roberta La Nave.
