Emma Dante has yet again created a delicate and powerful mosaic of memories as she narrates the love between two elderly people (Sabino Civilleri and Manuela Lo Sicco), who ring in the New Year to the notes of old songs, ‘dancing’ their story backwards. They slowly undress, look different, seem younger and, immersed in the voices of Mina, Tenco and an array of other unforgettable songs, look back on the highlights of their lives and, while reminiscing, rediscover themselves. An ode to love, albeit somewhat melancholy, that possesses all the compositional force of the Sicilian director’s carnal, archaic and ritual theater style.
