The Tale of A Man Who Became A Tree

Most critics consider Mimmo Borrelli to be one of the finest living Italian playwrights, and he has always been admired for his unique use of language. He typically blends Campania dialects, reinventing them in a poetic key, and creating a harsh and stark idiom that is both literary and popular. In 2018, La Cupa received a raft of awards: the Ubu Prize for direction and dramaturgy, the ANCT Critics’ Prize for best play, and three Le Maschere Del Teatro Italiano Prizes. The audience experiences the play as a family saga, deep in the bowels of a quarry filled with guilt and crime.
