The two crucial issues addressed by Top Girls, a play Caryl Churchill wrote when Margaret Thatcher was the British Prime Minister, are how women relate to power and to what extent one can play a leadership role without losing one’s femininity. Yet, over forty years later, the issues remain relevant because we do not seem to be able to rid ourselves of that easily from a few recurring dichotomies: motherhood or career? Independence or family? And at what cost does one prevail over the other? But above all, to what extent does society help us if we aspire to both and claim them as our natural rights? Sara Putignano, Valentina Banci, Cristina Cattellani, Laura Cleri, Paola De Crescenzo, Martina De Santis, Corinna Andreutti and Simona De Sarno are the talented actors in this story about Marlene, a manager, who looks back at the compromises she has had to make to get where she is.
