Regretful Prose on the End of Sex
What if the last orgasm on Earth were to take place by 2030? This paradoxical premise is the starting point for Niccolò Fettarappa’s comedy, set in a grotesque and unsettling near future. As the European Union announces the end of desire, Italy is invaded by bears with uncontrollable sexual appetites. Against this backdrop, a couple in crisis drifts through the inertia of empty, listless afternoons, reading newspapers and exercising in the living room. Meanwhile, a journalist and a government-appointed zoologist shed light on the mystery of the bears. The collapse of desire becomes a way of examining a society caught between the urge to consume and the difficulty of connecting with others. Fettarappa uses absurdity and humour to create a satire of the present, in which the extinction of sex is merely the starting point for exploring what remains when even desire seems to lose its purpose.
