Following Il bugiardo and Arlecchino servitore di due padroni, Valerio Binasco returns to Carlo Goldoni with Una delle ultime sere di Carnovale: the great playwright’s affectionate yet poignant farewell to his Venetian audience. For Binasco, however, Goldoni is more than a master of comedy: he is an acute observer of human nature, capable of revealing, beneath the laughter, the truth of relationships, their hypocrisies and small, everyday deceptions. The director and Artistic Director of Teatro Stabile di Torino finds a striking modernity in Goldoni: humour always springs from vulnerability, from a “pathology” of living, and this is precisely why it still speaks to us today. Arlecchino, Lelio and Anzoletto are both comic masks and human beings, vivid expressions of a humanity that never truly changes. In Binasco’s vision, comedy thus becomes an act of love for theatre itself — a theatre that refuses to rest on the past or measure its worth by applause, and continues to question the present through the most direct and vibrant language of all: that of the stage.
