Thanks to gas he controls industry, thanks to chemical fertilisers he can control agriculture, thanks to his fifty ‘safe’ companies (because they are guaranteed by the State) he reigns over the financial market and can easily absorb a colossal part of national savings. There is no city, town, village or street in Italy without an Agip petrol station (with its Black dog logo): through these permanent ‘roadblocks’, the Man with the Black dog (Il signore del cane nero) can monitor every movement of people or goods.” This is how Giovanni Guareschi described Enrico Mattei, a key figure in Italian economic and cultural history, from the end of the Second World War to 1962, the year of his tragic death.
